One of the biggest challenges most of us have faced in the world of network marketing, is recruiting people only to have them go on the witness protection program. You know what I’m talking about, right? They join then almost right away never answer a phone call from you again.
The problem exacerbates when we try encouraging them, pushing them and, in their minds, bugging them to the point they don’t want to hear from us again. This is all done with the best of intentions of course but in hindsight, it’s a lot of wasted energy. The question is, why do some of us do this?
It’s because that’s what we’re all taught when you join any one of the many network marketing opportunities out there. It’s time to stop babysitting your downline (I like calling them business partners). It’s counter-productive because you can’t force someone to do something they don’t want to do.
That said, in a similar scenario, I remember prospecting and recruiting a 30s something couple into my business. They lived in a pretty posh part of town, a nice condo near downtown Toronto. With this new power couple about to join my business, I began thinking about the down payment I was going to put on my new Mercedes, I was thinking about all the real estate I was going to purchase. Things were going absolutely swimmingly!
When it came down to him signing on the dotted line to join, his pen stopped moving. Then he asked for a loan – I’m not kidding – to pay for his joining fee. It was $500 to join.
I was thinking to myself, this is not happening. Are you kidding me? This successful guy and his wife need to borrow $500 from me to join. What?? Like hell I’m going to give him the cash. So what did I do?
I gave him the cash.
You can probably guess how it all ended and it wasn’t pleasant but eventually, I did get my money back. That experience affected me in a way that I would never do that again; loan someone money to join my business because of my desperation to get sign ups. I learned my lesson that the best way to build your network marketing business is to recruit people who actually WANT to do the business. People like you.
It’s called attraction marketing and it works essentially the opposite way we’re taught when joining a network marketing or online business. In other words, instead of hounding your family and friends, why not talk to people who are already hungry for a new business opportunity?
Here are three ways:
1) Follow a proven system from a successful online entrepreneur that doesn’t involve bugging your family and friends.
2) Offer something of value to your prospects where they will benefit instead of pushing your business opportunity in their face.
3) Build your email list. The reason you may have heard the slogan from Internet marketers “The money is in the list” is because it’s true. Build your email list!
